Vuollerim

Vuollerim is located where the Lilla Lule River and the Stora Lule River meet, approximately 40 kilometers south of Jokkmokk.  The first homestead was built in the fertile valley in 1756.  Vuollerim, which means the lower stretch of smooth water in Sámi became an agricultural center in both the river valleys, with salmon fishing as an important side occupation.
When the hydroelectric era began in the village in the 1950s, many chose to quit farming and take a job with Vattenfall.  Vuollerim changed from being a typical agricultural village with approximately 300 inhabitants to being a hydroelectric town.  A few years later the population had increased six times.  The village turned into a modern town with good public services, good means of communication and adequate businesses.  In the beginning of the 1980´s a 6000 year-old Stone Age habitation-site was discovered on Älvnäset in Vuollerim. In 1990 a modern archaeological museum, Vuollerim6000 years, opened. The museum is built around the archaeological excavation that started in 1983.
